One of the greatest \’Good Emperors\’ often wrote notes on how he could be a virtuous ruler
When you encounter unkindness: See whether it is true or it is false, if it is true, accept it, if false, present the facts. Remind yourself how many mistakes you’ve made, and be affectionate, speak directly to them. Ask yourself what nature has given in order to counter the defect. Be kind. Be good. No matter what. If you trusted someone untrustworthy, it is foolish to expect good, it will happen. Remember, do not do evil in return for the evil that they do to you.
Everything is how you interpret it: this is not literally true but you can take it as a crutch, your mind determines how things happen, you can choose not to feel harm and thus interpret things that way, feel grateful for being alive and be tranquil. Gain control of the mind and gain mastery of things positively. Your mind should sit superior to the body and its sensations. You are rational and you must follow nature.
Your mind should be superior to your body: Do not allow pain, fever, drowsiness to change you. Do not give in to sensations, do not make your mind the slave of the body. Do not allow yourself to give in. End the endless suffering. Eudaemonia comes from the self.
Do not wander in your mind, meditate and act critically: Observe your mind critically, do not allow things to be bad. Are you acting like a child, a tyrant, or an idiot. Act based on principles. Do not act on a lack of principles.
Don’t retreat from the world: Don’t stop trying to make a positive difference in society, help other people as a joy, it is not out of joy, recognise that people are humans, are here to cooperate, and will die. There must be a contemplation of the positive qualities of others. When you need encouragement, keep in mind that there is the good in the other.
Your Opinion to yourself matters more than that of a stranger: We all love ourselves more than others but care about others opinions.
Be open to correction: You can change your own mind and decisions, as they are merely perceptions
Cherish the freedom and liberty of everyone: learn to welcome unwelcome truths, seek to place yourself in their shoes. Habituate yourself not to be inattentive to what another has to say, and so far as possible, be in the mind of the speaker. Treat everyone as equal by law, of equality of status and speech, of rulers who respect the liberty of their subjects above all else. Recognise that power corrupts, it makes people malicious, cunning, hypocritical and ruthless. Remember this and check yourself. Do not be despotic. Fight to be the person who philosophy tried to make you.
Have Some self respect: Don’t view anything as beneficial which causes you to break a promise, lose your self-respect, or hate anyone. Do not make yourself the tyrant or slave of any man.
Do your job without whining: Don’t complain and don’t be ashamed, don’t complain even inwardly to yourself
Obstacle is the way: interpretation of the event is what hurts you, figure out what the perception of the impediment is going to be, the action is going to inevitably happen, so what good can come from it. What is the possibility of the event. Make sure you take what you have and make the best of it from now on. This allows you to smile and remain happy at all times
Adversity is a part of nature: things are bound to have setbacks and tragedies, everyone will experience it. Do not pray for them to not occur. Pray for the gift of not fearing these, and be present and aware in the present. Endure all onslaughts, stand firm and tame the fury of the water around it.
It is through adversity that we get stronger: Pur hardships lead us to get stronger, this is not a misfortune, but to bear it like a good man is how fortune is made
Everything has happened before: everything has happened in life over and over, so this is not something new, look at history and be comfortable with the fact that such events have taken place in history, in all that happens, there comes before your eyes the same concerns. You can use what has happened before and learn from it and grow better. Our business is with things that really matter
Stay practical and deal with what’s in front of you: if you seek tranquility, do fewer things better, don’t let your emotions override what your mind tells you. Wipe away the impress of imagination, stop being a puppet. Learn what you even despair, limit yourself to the present. Focus instead on the virtues of the power. Focus on qualities and things that are impossible: honesty, dignity, endurance, austerity, resignation, moderation, seriousness, magnanimity, sincerity.
Focus on doing what is right and be prepared to face resistance: if it is not right, do not do it, if it is untrue do not say it. True delight and stillness is in one unselfish action to the next. Do not expect the perfect outcome. Attempt the action that is good. Even if something bad happens, it will still not be bad. Ambition means tying your well being to what other people say or do, sanity means tying it to your own actions.
Do your duty and despise cowardice: Be at spot where you as a person decided to station yourself, or wherever you are told to stand. Focus on what you are doing is right or wrong, focus on whether your behaviour is a good man’s or a bad one’s.
Memonto Mori: The time for action is now, decide once and for all, justice, honesty, courage, self-control and rational action above all else. Remember your time is limited, you have one chance and do the right thing. Death overshadows, be good, be alive, be able. You will suffer for good. Take your life and live it properly. Think you arre dead, live the rest of your life properly. Don’t give the fuck up even if you are not going to be the next pro, you can build your character and do good for the world. Be free, achieve humility, serve god, accept, serve, and obey god.
Practice getting back on track: When jarred by unavoidable circumstances, don’t lose rhythm, get back to your work and get back to harmony, do not feel disgusted, avoid getting distracted with pride and showing off, don\’t distract yourself from moral actions, celebrate behaving like a human, however imperfectly and embrace the pursuit that you’re embarked on. Pride and outward show is a seducer of reason, do not pretend to be occupied with the weightiest business, because that is when it has you in its spell, it is stupid to pretend.
Look beneath to see things for what they really are: expensive wine is fancy grape juice, robes are sheep wool, even if people are wise, look at the underlying person beneath the shallow surface, even the wise ones and see them for what they really are, what evokes love, admiration and vanity. See if their disdain can harm or praise anyone. When facing their insults, hatred, you can see you don\’t need to insult them. Speak the truth as you see it with kindness and humility
Recognise wealth is neither good nor evil: It is not good for things your true good is your virtues, do not be satisfied of things, people will take things away from, then there is problem, people who despise wealth are equally bad. Be equanimous to things. Treat what you have as nonexistent. Don’t overvalue things as you will lose them
Express gratitude: recognise you need to work on your character, there should be generosity, discipline, training, development of the individual, do not have time for slandering, do not have time for frivolous matter, endure, make peace with people you have fallen out with, do not let emotions cloud judgement, offer praise without making a difference, do not say Im too busy, love for children, show teachers respect, make sure you have pressing business then only. Display dignity without pretension, Stop talking about good man is like and be one.
